Hair Reduction
Our Palomar system for hair reduction uses intense pulsed light (IPL) which covers a wider area of skin and allows for faster coverage of the treatment area than most lasers. Pulses of light are absorbed by pigment in the hair follicle which creates heat in the follicle. The heat then loosens the hair and disables the stem cells responsible for growing new hair. Any area of the body can be treated, except around the eyes.
Hair is always in 3 different stages of development. Hair which is already falling out, or follicles in a “sleeping” phase, will not attract the light from the IPL. Therefore, multiple treatments are needed to target new hair growth as the follicle awakens. The number of treatments and interval of treatments vary depending on the density of hair and location on the body. As a general rule, 5-6 treatments are needed for best results. Some individuals require a “touch-up” or single treatment for isolated appearance of hairs at 1-2 year intervals.
There are some individuals who have hormonal problems which may require medical treatments (creams or oral medications) to assist in decreasing hair growth. The best results in individuals with these problems can be judged by decreased time intervals for shaving, plucking, waxing, or cream hair removal.
What Should I Expect After Treatment?
Immediately after treatment you may experience a warm sensation with minor swelling for possibly up to 24 hours. The treated hair will continue to appear for 7-30 days after treatment. This is not new hair growth. It is the treated hair being expelled from the follicles. These should not be picked or plucked.
Before Treatment
Any mode of tanning the skin 2 weeks before treatment should be stopped. Plucking or waxing should be stopped 4 weeks before any treatment. The area to be treated should be shaved within 24 hours before treatment.
